Since we arrived a little early, Bill decided to get miles in from the campground. I had not slept well the night before, so went back to bed when he left at 6:45. At 7:30, the phone rang; another flat.
That is with a new tube and tire on. All this technology is nice but can't someone figure out a way to prevent bicycle flats? Fortunately, Bill had unhitched the camper from the truck the night before, so I could quickly go where he was and pick him up. When the road is quiet, he can listen to the tube to find the puncture, but with so much traffic whizzing by, that's impossible to do. So it was back to the campground where he took the rear tire off, got a dishpan of water and proceeded to run the tube through the water to find the leak. He had it fixed fairly quickly and wondered whether he should tempt fate and go back out. I said, "Well, I can always come get you again." So he was off and did another 20 miles before coming back to the little beach house on wheels. When he returned, he told me about seeing the ocean for the first time, which means he has now bicycled from coast to coast,
and about a sandwich shop where he stopped for something to eat. He usually stops mid morning for a small McDonald's hamburger and a cookie for a burst of protein and carbs to keep going. This time he bought a small sub from a shop called, "Larry's Giant Subs". What was so unusual about this place was that the owner had purchased King Kong's head from Universal Studios.
This is the same one that freaked out our youngest son on the ride years ago. He was scared until I pointed to the giant gorilla who was threatening to eat the train car we were in and said, "Look down there, he has no legs!" Then he relaxed knowing it was a fake. What are the chances of seeing this same gorilla face in a sub shop in Florida?! LOL! The two people working in the sub shop allowed Bill to bring his bicycle into the shop to keep it safe and he said the sandwich was "Spectacular!"
When he got back, we had some lunch and went out looking for a Walmart to pick up a few groceries. Then back to the camper to escape the heat! The next ride will bring us to Jacksonville then onward north. Thanks for reading.
